NEWS Grant pushes ‘show and tell’ site model for oil and gas well clean energy transition closer 08 February 2022 A live demonstrator that shows how patented technology can transform oil and gas wells to source limitless green energy is a step closer because of innovation funding. Deep geothermal delivery specialist CeraPhi Energy is accelerating creation of a demonstrator skid for its patented CeraPhiWell to be set up on well sites for potential clients to witness how they can be part of the race to Net Zero and bring lasting investment returns. Modelling, designing and software for a CeraPhiWell demonstrator skid is now under way after the award of a Growth Through Innovation Fund grant from the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). CeraPhiWell is closed loop technology that fits into old wells to extract heat from deep underground by a downhole heat exchanger. The heat can be used as direct heat for heating or cooling for nearby communities, agriculture and industry or, for higher temperatures, be converted to clean energy. It can be used to create commercially useable heat from the sub-surface anywhere in the world. Karl Farrow, CeraPhi CEO, said the target was to have the demonstrator on site by the end of June: “This grant has given us crucial support in development of this live demonstrator, which is critical to drive forward the CeraPhiWell for deployment and then the next step to create jobs for live projects.”“Investing in research and development and innovation is essential yet burdensome for a young fast-moving business like ours needing to rapidly develop technology to move forward and expand. NEWS Our team is expanding 07 February 2022 In the first few weeks of 2022 CeraPhi Energy has welcomed two new members to our growing team, Angela Hogg and Holly Harvey-Perdicou. Both are based in our Great Yarmouth head office and will work alongside the rest of the CeraPhi Energy team. Angie joins us from one the regions leading offshore wind companies but is excited to be joining CeraPhi Energy to be part of the geothermal journey we are on. She will be taking on much of our bookkeeping and admin duties. Holly was for many years, before moving to live in the Far East, a manager at EEEGR and led the events and marketing team. She will be taking on the same role for CeraPhi and taking the lead on organising our attendance at events, planning our own webinars, events and steering our marketing campaigns. NEWS Climate change three-star general joins CeraPhi’s deep geothermal crusade 17 January 2022 Deep geothermal delivery company enlists retired army leader who changed MoD’s stance on climate change, emissions and sustainability to its team. Much-decorated Lt General Richard Nugee becomes CeraPhi Energy’s global strategist. Deep geothermal’s potential for delivering reliable baseload energy for heating, cooling and electricity is huge, unlike wind and solar, it is not dependent on weather and is crucial to global renewable energy mix. The much-decorated military leader who changed the Ministry of Defence’s approach to climate change has joined the crusade for large-scale geothermal energy by taking on the role as global strategist for pioneers CeraPhi Energy. Lt General Richard Nugee, a three-star general who wrote the report that led to the MoD’s Climate Change and Sustainability Strategic Approach, takes a seat on CeraPhi’s advisory board and will champion the business, a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, as an employer for military leavers. The retired Chief of the Defence People, and one of the army’s most senior officers, said: “CeraPhi’s mission and the deep geothermal solution is really appealing with huge potential. We need to persuade the government and industry, particularly energy hungry industry, what the geothermal offer is.” CeraPhi, headquartered in Great Yarmouth, with bases at Houston’s Green Town Labs and in London and Cornwall, is driving deep geothermal projects using its proprietary closed loop technology across the world, with a total of nearly 1.2GW of heat, cooling and power projects under development and more than 1.8 GW under appraisal. Lt General Nugee, appointed Non-Executive Director for Climate Change in Defence last March after retiring from a 36-year military career, now focuses on driving climate change strategy and sustainability activities. His support for deep geothermal is rooted in its potential for delivering reliable baseload energy for heating, cooling and electricity that, unlike wind and solar, is not dependent on weather. It is crucial to the future global renewable energy mix, he said. “By 2050, we will need at least five times more renewable energy than we need now. How are we going to do it? Solar panels and wind can’t achieve it all, nor can nuclear. None of the solutions will be sufficient in their own right, so what is there? “Deep geothermal is a solution that can be taken all around the world. Once it is drilled, it is there forever. When one drilling can heat 20,000 homes, a town would need just two wells drilled to bring up enough heat indefinitely.”  His work on the Climate Change and Sustainability Review Lead in Defence document during the pandemic outlined why the Armed Forces needed to adapt to a warming world and become more sustainable. His work shifted the MoD’s stance on cutting emissions and sustainability measures. “We may well run out of electricity in 2035 unless we do something. We have got 10 years to put in enough wells to be able to be part of the mix to create renewable green energy and that part of the mix isn’t just going to be deep geothermal, we need much more energy, and we need more of it to be renewable. There is a massive task here. “We need to get the message across to industrial users that we can produce 5MW from every single drilling and it will be eternal. “Its potential domestic application means, for example where I live, with a population of 31,000, just two wells could provide all the electricity for homes, our industry, enterprise zones and all our community needs. “After the upfront cost, this could service all our electricity needs, completely independently.” Karl Farrow, CeraPhi Energy CEO, said: “Richard shares our values and will help shape and develop our strategy.” “Richard is dedicated to making change and recognised that, not only does CeraPhi have the mission to make change, we have the technology and expertise and the commitment and drive.” Lt General Nugee, is a Member of the British Empire (MBE), Commander of the British Empire (CBE), Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO), and Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB). NEWS CeraPhi Energy awards Petrofac engineering design contract for demonstrator skid for drawing clean energy from oil and gas wells. 10 January 2022 International energy services provider Petrofac to engineer and design deep geothermal demonstrator skid for CeraPhi Energy. CeraPhi to use the skid on and offshore to show how existing oil and gas operations can be decarbonised. Demonstrator to be on UK site by Q2 this year. Deep geothermal delivery company CeraPhi Energy has engaged Petrofac to create a demonstrator to show how oil and gas wells can be repurposed to create renewable heat and power. The international energy services provider will complete the engineering and design of CeraPhi’s proprietary CeraPhiWell™ Field Demonstrator Skid for CeraPhi to take on site and to illustrate to potential clients how existing oil and gas operations can be decarbonised. The model will be designed to be used on any well, initially onshore, with an offshore version being developed later. The onshore demonstrator should be ready for site installation on an existing site in Q2 this year. Under the engineering framework agreement, the skid will test the working subsurface fluids produced by CeraPhi’s downhole heat exchanger in its proprietary closed loop system. The skid will initially be deployed on an existing UK oil and gas site with the offtake modelled for heating, cooling and power for industrial use for homes nearby. The modular system will be designed to be moved quickly from well to well and site to site. By demonstrating energy offtake with the skid alongside field development planning, removes the need for extensive studies and deploying bespoke systems on a plug-and-play basis.  Karl Farrow, CeraPhi CEO, said combining Petrofac’s topside expertise with CeraPhi’s well knowledge offers swift production of the demonstrator to enable CeraPhi to access sites quickly – the aim is within 24 hours – and plug into an existing well to operate the CeraPhi technology, producing kilowatts of heat and electricity. “We have been discussing our geothermal intentions with Petrofac’s New Energy Services team for around 12 months and have great confidence in its ability to translate its process engineering support and quality engineering into a robust engineered package. “Completion of this phase will enable us to then go out to third party manufacturing to build and for site installation in Q2 this year.” Jonathan Carpenter, Petrofac vice president said: “Petrofac is excited to use its process engineering design capability to support the demonstration of Ceraphi’s CeraPhiWell™ technology. NEWS Deep Geothermal – The ethical investment for the energy transition. 20 December 2021 The story of deep geothermal has potential to mirror offshore wind’s swift and steep escalation from niche to mainstream. Reusing end-of-life wells to draw heat from the ground for large scale heating, cooling and power production is a prime target for smart ethical investment, forecasts Sital Joshi, new interim Chief Financial Officer for geothermal delivery company CeraPhi Energy. COP26 left us in no doubt that energy systems must change quickly and financial funders, public and private, have leading roles in making that change happen. Arguably, funders have a responsibility to deliver not just the energy transition but also the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We believe geothermal is best placed to deliver on both. Funding geothermal is an ethical investment because it brings huge social impact globally by taking energy to the consumer alleviating fuel poverty and improving lives of normal people.COP26 reinforced ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) as the ‘first tick in the box’ of any investment appraisal. Geothermal assures this and provides secure long-term yields. It also takes away liability for plugging and abandoning the wells by the owner.Our advanced geothermal system process using a closed loop system means that it is isolated from any sub surface formation that included fluids, so no seismicity is created.Our order book is getting larger, with growing demand, and my new role is to secure funding to implement the business plan and steward the company, that has a very strong management team of seasoned oil and gas professionals and entrepreneurs, largely with exploration backgrounds, financially for the challenges ahead to ensure it’s resourced appropriately to deliver them.As a founder of Boustead renewables with experience in working with high growth SMEs, has, I understand where strengths and weaknesses can exist but also foresee opportunities and threats during a high growth phase.I have experience in solar and emerging storage technologies, arranging funding for more than 200MW of solar PV and energy storage projects, as well as a current pipeline of 3GW of various technologies.In terms of funding, I believe oil majors –have a part to play. NEWS Norfolk green energy solution to be highlighted in Westminster 17 December 2021 Cabinet minister Brandon Lewis promises to highlight deep geothermal’s “exciting” potential to government ministers at Westminster. He visited geothermal development specialists CeraPhi Energy to discover how green deep geothermal energy could heat and power the UK to reach net zero targets. The team called for similar recognition for geothermal as offshore wind to bring to the “clean and almost everlasting energy source” to market. NEWS CeraPhi Energy sign Exclusive Agreement with Oil and Gas UK to develop an Energy Hub “GeoHub” 16 December 2021 Geothermal Development Company CeraPhi Energy and UK Oil & Gas PLC (London AIM: UKOG) (“the Company”) is pleased to announce that it has signed a Heads of Terms to enter into a joint venture agreement to develop part of UK Oil and Gas Horse Hill site into a geothermal energy hub (“GeoHub”). The GeoHub, currently at a conceptual stage, is envisaged to generate and supply more than 200,000 megawatt hours per year of continuous baseload, primarily as heat energy. The project’s first phase would aim to supply significant industrial end-users in the locality with 100% green heating and cooling plus ancillary green electricity and/or hydrogen. The GeoHub concept centres around six new deep geothermal boreholes utilising CeraPhi’s proprietary “closed-loop” downhole heat exchanger technology, designed to transfer heat from the surrounding hot rocks via heat pumps to the surface. Unlike most conventional geothermal wells, the closed-loop system requires no injection or circulation of water within the rocks between boreholes, eliminating the possibility of induced seismic activity. As in established heat networks, heat from the GeoHub would be delivered to the end user via a small diameter hot water pipe and heat pump system. Subject to necessary permissions, further wells and/or sites could be added at any stage to supply a wider spectrum of end users. The GeoHub’s envisaged potential to supply continuous baseload energy with zero carbon emissions is fully in line with the UK government’s “build back greener” net-zero strategy. It is envisaged that current oil production at the site would continue to the end of economic life and then would be repurposed to add further geothermal baseload, transitioning the site into 100% renewable energy provision. Upon execution of the joint venture agreement, conceptual engineering design and preparation of a planning application are planned to commence in the New Year. Karl Farrow, CeraPhi’s Chief Executive commented: “GeoHub will hopefully be the first of many, a scalable cost-effective solution for baseload energy providing the end user the cleanest and most cost effect long term solution to energy right from under our feet using a relatively small footprint, in this case, re-using and existing Oil and Gas site which really is a sustainable energy transition. NEWS CeraPhi Energy signs the Armed Forces Covenant 24 November 2021 CeraPhi Energy signs the Armed Forces Covenant, a private closed door event in the MoD alongside Mission Renewable formed to harness the opportunity for skills migration from the veteran community to jobs in the renewable energy sector and Aker Offshore Wind. Signing on behalf of the Ministry of Defence was Lieutenant General Richard Wardlaw OBE MSc BEng MInstRE, MoD’s Chief of Defence Logistics and Support.
