Providing evidence demonstrating how the adoption of Geothermal Energy – at scale – could support 2050 climate change goals, MD of the CeraPhi Energy business, Karl Farrow, contributed to the ‘Predictions for The Future’ section of the industry report. NEWS CeraPhi Announces a Raft of New Appointments as Demand for Geothermal Energy Solutions Increase 25 July 2022 We are delighted to announce the appointment of six new members of staff and three new advisory board appointees as we continue our significant growth. The appointments include three new team members in Great Yarmouth: Zach Chilvers, a masters graduate in mechanical engineering, Paige Draper a graduate in automotive engineering with a post grad in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and Suzanne Allen a physics graduate who will be responsible for collecting data on the carbon footprint of industrial activity. A further appointment is in our Houston office, where Higinia Torregrosa joins as US Projects Co-ordinator. Higinia has a Masters in Renewable Energy from the IMF Business School and a Masters in Exploration Geoscience from Imperial College London.  The appointments are added to with the employment of two summer interns based in the UK. On our advisory board we are pleased to welcome a number of industry renowned experts including Howard Tollman, Rupert Cutler and Michael Kuhlman, all with vast experience in energy, fintech and finance – including downhole development of advanced geothermal tool technology – and who will form an integral part in influencing and shaping Government policy on the use of Geothermal as a viable energy solution. NEWS CeraPhi Energy Welcomes Work Experience Student 14 July 2022 This week we welcomed Thomas White, a student from the University Technical College of Norfolk, who joins the CeraPhi Energy team for two weeks as part of his work experience. Thomas is currently studying for his A-levels in Mathematics and Physics, as well as completing his Cambridge Technical Level 3 in Engineering and has a keen passion to have a career within renewable energy. As part of his work experience, CeraPhi Energy has provided Thomas with a day-to-day insight into what its like to work in the business working alongside predominately the engineering team, Thomas has been doing a lot of research into geothermal energy to further his knowledge in this area. He has also been given the opportunity to see first hand what other departments do in CeraPhi Energy to gain a holistic view of the company. Speaking about the opportunity to gain first-hand experience with CeraPhi Energy, Thomas said: “The renewable energy sector is so broad and developing at an astonishing rate and I personally feel like it’s such a great field to pursue a career in. NEWS Development Begins on Revolutionary Closed Loop Geothermal Technology 11 July 2022 The UK’s first end to end Geothermal business is making significant advances with its state-of-the-art proprietary closed loop geothermal technology – designed to generate clean thermal energy from deep below the earth surface – as it appoints a leading British manufacturer for the build. CeraPhi Energy, based in Great Yarmouth, has announced Calder, one of the country’s leading pumping equipment specialists, has been awarded the contract to manufacture its very first CeraPhiTru™ unit. The unit is a proprietary technology designed to prove the commercial validity of energy from deep wells and how that energy is used. Initial designs for the CeraPhiTru™ unit was successfully completed by Petrofac earlier this year based on specifications provided by the CeraPhi Energy team. NEWS CeraPhi Energy awarded funds to undertake pioneering decarbonisation study 18 May 2022 Deep geothermal delivery specialist CeraPhi Energy has been awarded the first of its kind geothermal study to undertake repurposing of offshore oil and gas wells using its proprietary advanced closed loop system. The study will cover the initial phase of a staged process to determine how retrofitted wells can reduce the carbon footprint of an operating platform. The project is being led by the CeraPhi Subsurface Engineering Team in collaboration with topside engineering services company Petrofac. The study will use EnQuest’s Magnus Platform as the base case. The Magnus Platform, formally operated by BP, is one of the UK largest operating facilities and sits north of the Shetland Islands. Magnus is a fully integrated drilling and production facility with a design capacity of 85,400 stbpd of crude oil, and 110 mmscfd of gas export and a maximum of 240,000 bpd of produced water. The study will incorporate the use of CeraPhi proprietary advanced closed loop technology, CeraPhiWell™, that is designed to fit into old wells to extract heat from deep underground by a downhole heat exchanger. Depending on the operating temperatures established in the study the heat produced could be used as direct power and/or heating or cooling for utilities and other services reducing the overall carbon emissions of the facility. NEWS ‘Europe has become a slave to Russia’: Can geothermal energy increase UK’s fuel independence? 1 April 2022 The UK can use geothermal energy to reduce its energy reliance on Russia in the wake of the Ukraine invasion, a former oil and gas industry veteran claims. Karl Farrow is the CEO of CeraPhi, a British geothermal energy company founded in 2020 by four ex-oil and gas executives. He says that geothermal energy – a renewable power that harnesses the heat and steam from underground reservoirs – is far more viable than gas and oil. He said: “Europe has become a slave to Russia from an energy point of view. Every country should have a right to be energy, food, and water independent and I think every country can be. “Deep geothermal is available everywhere, it’s basically heat escaping from out of the ground from earth’s big battery. We’re sitting on 6,000 degrees of temperature from the centre of the earth trying to radiate out.” The UK has a wealth of oil and gas expertise and infrastructure which can be repurposed to geothermal, Mr Farrow says. “We are a country that has global expertise in extracting energy from the subsurface, so we can do the same with deep-geothermal heat, and this heat can allow us to produce electricity which can provide us a baseload energy source,” he said. “But more importantly, heat from a direct source like deep geothermal can move us away from using gas for things like heating, as we can use it straight from the ground which means we are then not dependent on foreign imports of hydrocarbon like gas.” Paul Stockley, head of oil and gas at law firm Fieldfisher, says there have been a number of successful and commercially viable geothermal projects that repurpose existing infrastructure, but admits equipment and infrastructure costs are an issue. “Costs are a major factor in deciding whether geothermal projects are workable,” he said. “Nevertheless, many projects could still be economically viable and compare favourably to the costs of drilling new oil wells. “The oil price is also something to consider, but there is likely to be less volatility in the price of energy produced from geothermal sources. “Particularly where repurposing existing oil and gas infrastructure, these projects would in theory qualify for government grants under the Net Zero emissions by 2050 policy commitment. “Repurposing oil and gas wells, where viable, seems an obvious route for the government to support. “Where converting existing subterranean infrastructure like shale wells is technically and economically viable, the government has a responsibility to promote and enable geothermal conversion when balancing the trilemma of energy security, affordable supply, and meeting climate goals.” Mr Farrow also admits there is a cost element to access geothermal and it is not a commercial model that gives double-digit returns in a short period of time like oil and gas. “It’s a long-term gain, it’s a utility model and creates an energy source that can be accessed from the same well for decades,” he added. “I think we are very vulnerable in our dependence on fossil fuels.
